TCGplayer grades on a standard condition ladder — Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played, and Damaged — and buyers expect your NM to mean the same thing as everyone else’s NM on the same product page. Getting this consistent is less about knowing the rules once and more about applying them the same way on card five hundred as on card one.

Step 1: Use TCGplayer’s official standard, not a personal one

TCGplayer publishes an official conditioning guide describing what separates each tier — check both front and back for whitening, scuffing, edge wear, corner wear, and dents. If you’re not sure where a card falls, treat it as a lookup you do every time rather than something you eyeball from memory once you’ve listed a few hundred cards.

Step 2: When in doubt, grade down

If a card sits right on the line between two conditions, the safer call for avoiding disputes is the lower condition. A buyer who gets a card graded conservatively is pleasantly surprised; a buyer who gets a card graded generously opens a dispute.

Step 3: Check both sides of the card

Flaws on the back of a card count the same as flaws on the front for TCGplayer’s standard. A common grading mistake is checking only the front because that’s the side facing up in a sleeve or binder.

Step 4: Use photos when a call is close
