# How to tell if a card's price spike will last

> Check whether a card's price jump on tcgplayer is a real trend or a dead-cat bounce before you act on it.

Not every price jump means the same thing. A card that got bought out because buyers cleared thin listings is a different situation from a card whose price has been climbing for weeks. Hoard surfaces a few signals that help you tell them apart before you reprice into a spike, or buy back a card expecting the gain to hold.

## Check whether it was a buy-out or a trend

Open the card in [Movers](/how-to/find-todays-market-movers) or its detail panel. A **`BOUGHT OUT · 2H AGO`** badge means buyers just cleared the listings and the price is moving *right now* — that's a supply event, not necessarily a demand trend. A card with no badge that's been climbing steadily across a 7-day or 30-day window is a more grounded signal than a same-day spike with a thin-market badge attached.

A **`N LISTED`** badge on the same row is worth reading alongside the price move: if only a couple of copies are listed, one seller's price can define the whole "market," and a spike built on that is easier to reverse than one where plenty of copies are still trading.

## If you're looking at it as a buy candidate

On the Buy List (Pro plans), Hoard already filters out the fakes for you. A card only gets a **Trending ↑** badge when its short-term rise (5 to 14 days) lines up with its 90-day trend. If a card's recent uptick sits on top of a card that's been declining over 90 days, Hoard treats that as a dead-cat bounce and suppresses the badge rather than showing a false trend reversal. The 90-day trend badge itself is color-coded — green for a trend up 5% or more, red for down 10% or more, neutral in between — so you can see the longer arc at a glance next to the short-term number.

## What this doesn't tell you

None of these signals know about a reprint announcement, a ban, or an upcoming set release that changes what's playable. If you can't explain why a card moved, treat that as a reason for caution regardless of what the badges say.
